Scary Movie 5 Review

Scary Movie or rather Scary Movie 5 is the fifth the latest installment of the slick, highly profitable parody franchise. Directed by Malcolm D. Lee and written by David Zucker, the latest movie of the series will terribly kill you as there is nothing scary at all, till the end. And that is the scariest thing about this spoof sequel which takes genial aim at horror movies without much inspiration or manic energy.

The movie is directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother), a newcomer to the series. Scary Movie 5 focuses on a married couple, Jody (Ashley Tisdale) and Dan (Simon Rex), who adopt his dead brother’s children, all of whom seem possessed by a demon. They even set up cameras around their home to track the evil spirit’s activities. In an attempt to bond with their new children, Jody auditions for a ballet performance, Black Swan, and is cast in the lead role as the Swan Queen while Dan does experiments at his lab to make apes super-intelligent.

Meanwhile, a continuing pattern of bizarre paranormal activity in their new home makes them investigate further. They eventually learn from the children that the attacks on their home are by “Mama”, the mother of the children, who is under a curse and is trying to get them back so she can sacrifice both her and them. Maria, the couple’s Hispanic live-in maid, is frightened and keeps experimenting with various rituals, Catholic and otherwise, to ward off the evil spirits in the house.

One thing which stands out in the Scary movie series is the irrelevancy of the plot synopsis of the Scary Movies. But this movie film is credited to screenwriters David Zucker and Pat Proft who have been involved in the Naked Gun and Hot Shots movies. Not only that, Zucker directed Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4.Being said that, the  new sequel is especially anemic, lacking the winning boyish giddiness which is the signature style of these writers. There are a few solid chuckles to be had in Scary Movie 5, but they tend to be throwaway jokes as opposed to sustained sequences or expertly executed running gags. The “Scary” movies are noted for its cameo appearances, and “V” is no exception with the little presence of Molly Shannon, Snoop Dogg, Heather Locklear, Usher, Mike Tyson and Tyler Perry.

The Scary Movie franchise has never been known for its intellectual comedy but its audience appeal was basically derived from just how low these movies are willing to go. Scary Movie 5 fails even to keep the lowest standard ever expected of such movies. You won’t ever feel like that you were watching a movie or sort of, even when the movie comes to an end.
